Sam squeezed his hand gently before taking the file and opening it. On the first page, there was a police report of the incident. "Okay, so this is the police report... Mary Winchester killed, John, Dean, and Sam survived. Huh, me and your brother have the same first name. The firefighter has found the evidence that the fire was started by an electrical failure in an outlet in Sam's room." Sam looked up and grinned. "Babe, you didn't cause it, an outlet did."
"Let's find out." He said before reading more. "John began to yell to first responders Mary was killed by a demon... Dean began to repeat the sentiment, believing his father fully. John has been found to be an unfit parent after mental evaluation. His beliefs of demons killing his wife have transferred to their son, Dean. Because of this, a court appointed psychiatrist has decided Dean should go to an asylum for children so he can learn the truth of his mother's death. Sam will be placed into foster care. The boys are being separated because the psychiatrist believes it is the only way to save Sam from their fathers delusions."
Sam flipped the page and his heart skipped a beat when he looked at the picture of a very young Dean grinning widely with a baby in his arms. "Dee..." He flipped it over and on the back it said 'Sam and Dean 1983'. "This is you and your brother." He whispered as he handed it over.
Dean took it, his hands shaking visibly. Memories began to flood his mind then, cooking with his mother, holding his brother. That night... "Sammy." He whispered, his eyes filing with tears. "Good night Sammy. I love you. That was the last thing I said to him before the fire."
"Well... We have his file. We can talk to his most recent foster home." He said, grabbing the file. He opened it and flipped to the last page. He frowned deeply then looked through the other pages quickly, growing pale. He went back to the last page and his stomach dropped when he read the last line. 'Sam Winchester has legally changed his name to Samuel Lacey after turning 18 and leaving his last foster home with Chuck Shurley.' Sam had no idea how to tell Dean what he just learned. He stood and went to the minibar, downing a small bottle of whiskey in one go.
Sam silently went back to the file and read the line "Sam Winchester has legally changed his name to Samuel Lacey after turning 18 and leaving his last foster home with Chuck Shurley. All the foster homes and times are the same as mine, his birthday is the same as mine, his name is the same as mine. I'm your brother."
Dean stood at the bar for a moment, thinking on the words. "That's impossible." He said softly. "I… You can't be my brother." He said. He looked down at the engagement ring on his finger. "We're gonna get married… You--" He looked at him and shook his head. "No, it's a mistake."
"I'm your brother, Dean. I'm that baby in the picture... We don't have to find your brother because he's right here. And we fuck each other." He mumbled as he sat down, his head in his hands. "And you were scared to see incest in your distant family tree. Didn't have to look far."
Dean shook his head. He grabbed the file away from Sam and began to read it, not believing it still. "No…" He felt his throat close, close to tears. "This… What the fuck?!" He shouted, slamming the folder on the desk. "This isn't fucking right!" He collapsed on the bed, burying his face in his own hands.
Sam shook his head. "I don't know." He mumbled, wiping his nose. He couldn't even look at Dean... He knew Dean wouldn't want him anymore. "Maybe... Let's sleep in different motels tonight. And meet somewhere tomorrow at 3pm? 3 if we wanna make this work... 4 if we're showing up for the most awkward drive back to California ever." He shrugged. "Gives us time to think."
Dean swallowed hard. "No." He whispered. He pulled the keys out of his pocket and set them on the table in front of Sam. "Three pm. If one of us there, we'll know… If neither of us is there, we'll know… And if we're both there… We'll know. But either way… You have a life back in California. If… If one of us decides we can't make this work… I know we're not gonna wanna see each other. So… We'll." He sighed a little. "You take the car back to California if things… Don't work out. You take care of her." He smiled weakly. "We'll meet at that coffee shop we stopped at when we got into town."
"I can't... I can't keep the impala. If I don't have you I can't have her." He smiled weakly. "She... Is part of you. And I wouldn't be able to handle that. I know that much. I'll take a bus or a flight back to California if I have to. Drive me to a place closer to the coffee shop so I can walk there tomorrow."
