Dean ran his thumb over it and nodded. "I will." He pulled out his wallet and passed a stack of bills to Sam. "This should be enough for a bus or whatever. Don't worry about it… Come on." He opened the door and headed out to the car. "Do you.. Wanna drive her?" He asked, holding up the keys.
"No, I'm good." He got in the passenger side and hugged his bag on his lap, leaning on the door. He knew if he drove he would want to put his arm around Dean and he just couldn't do that because he didn't know if Dean wanted it. Sam was his brother after all.
Dean drove stiffly in silence, both hands white knuckling the steering wheel. He was so confused, but… Even knowing the truth, he wanted to hug Sam, kiss him… But it was his BROTHER… He pulled up to a hotel near the coffee shop and stopped the car, resisting the urge to lean over and kiss him.
"Thanks for the ride." Sam said softly as he got out. "Hey... If one or both of us don't show tomorrow... I'm still your brother. Give it some time and maybe... Maybe we could talk, build up that relationship. I did always say I wanted a blood related brother." Sam smiled sadly and went inside before Dean could reply.
Dean opened his mouth to say something, wincing when the door shut in his face. He felt tears burn his eyes… Sam wouldn't want him. He slipped the ring off his finger, looking at it carefully. This stupid fucking trip ruined everything. He grabbed the ring box that had been slipped in the glove compartment and put the ring in it, slipping it into hs pocket before driving back to the hotel with blurred vision.
Sam got to his room and resisted the urge to drink because he didn't want to be hung over or not feeling well when he was waiting at the coffee shop. Instead, he showered and sat in bed reading his file, every word of it. Inside, he noticed a photo that had stuck face down. It was a wallet size photo of Dean looking down at Sam, letting him suck on his finger instead of a pacifier. He smiled softly and put the photo carefully in his wallet then went to bed, knowing what he'd do the next day.
Dean sat up all night, reading and rereading his file. He spent a long time staring at the photo of them from the file, and then at photos of them on his phone. Finally, he drifted to sleep, confident in his choice.
Sam woke in the morning and showered again then he played around on his computer to pass time until 3. At 2:30 he figured it wouldn't hurt to get there early and he pulled on a tee shirt that Dean gave him and a pair of jeans then walked down to the coffee shop. He ordered an ice coffee and sat, hopeful.
Dean cussed, double checking the things he'd bought. He drove as fast as he dared to the coffee shop, swearing at every red light. He parked a few blocks away and gathered up a stack of thick paper before getting out and walking toward the shop.
Dean smiled when he saw Sam in the distance. “Sam Winchester!” He screamed at the top of his lungs, not caring that people turned. He walked quickly toward him, holding out the first paper. It read, ‘I don’t care about our past.’ He flipped to the next one. ‘I care about our future.’ Flip. ‘I can’t stop thinking about you.’ Flip. ‘We’re human, we make mistakes.’ Flip. ‘But this. Us.’ Flip. ‘Will NEVER’ Flip. ‘Be a mistake.’ He reached Sam and dropped the papers, dropping to one knee and pulling out a ring box. He opened it, a silver ring with a band of blue in the center. “Will you be my husband, Sam Winchester?”
Sam stood and stared down at him in shock before yanking him up for a hard and passionate kiss, wrapping his arms around him. He faintly heard other people in the coffee shop clapping for them, but his heart was pounding so loud he could barely hear anything but it. He pulled back from the kiss and grinned as tears rolled down his cheeks. "I'd love to marry you." He whispered.
Dean grinned, his eyes filling with tears. "I don't care what those files say." He whispered. "I don't care. I need you." He slipped the ring on Sam's finger, and withdrew the box that held his own ring, putting it back on proudly.
